This week was our first annual spelling bee. What an exciting event. On Thursday, we saw eight students battle it out for the top two spots. The finalists were Dylan Han from Ms. Do's class and Lisbeth Luna from Mrs. Nakata's class.
Today, we held the second round for the fifth and sixth grade students. Our top finalists were Sarah Jung from Ms. Caro's class and Jomari Augustin from Mrs. Buck's class. Once we narrowed it down to these two, Dylan and Lisbeth rejoined the group for the finals.
There was a lot of energy in the room as the classrooms cheered on and supported the students from their rooms. Students even brought signs of support. Our top spellers were like rock stars. The top four students did well and the first two students were eliminated with the word "grammar." That left Jomari and Sarah as the finalists.
Both Sarah and Jomari hung in there for quite a few words. Ultimately, Sarah won the spelling bee. She was a gracious winner and her class cheered wildly for her. In fact, the students cheered for all the students who participated. I was very proud of not only our spelling bee participants, but our students and teachers who did a wonderful job in supporting and participating. I want to give a special thanks to Mrs. Goulding for being our Spell Mistress. Also, thanks to Mrs. Grigsby and Mrs. Dovetko for helping me judge.
We will have to wait another year to see who our spelling champion is for 2011-12. For now, it is Sarah Jung!
